Micro-invasive treatment of caries by resin infiltration

To treat caries in its initial stages helps to prevent severe long-term damage to the dentition. Non- and minimally-invasive approaches contribute substantially to reaching this aim. Recent techniques and products allow dentists to offer gentle, painless treatment options to their patients and, at the same time, to prolong the life span of their patient�s teeth.

This lecture will address the scientific foundations and clinical aspects of caries infiltration - a new concept for the micro-invasive treatment of early caries lesions. Dr. Paris together with Dr. Meyer-Lueckel (University of Kiel, Germany) have been working scientifically on the development and evaluation of this technique. The aim of caries infiltration is to arrest caries lesions by penetration of the lesion porosities with special low viscosity light curing resins, so called infiltrants. That way, diffusion pathways for cariogenic acids are blocked and lesions are arrested and stabilised. Particularly difficult-to-reach interproximal lesions that are not likely to respond to non-operative therapy alone can be treated by caries infiltration with almost no sacrifice of tooth substance. Another indication comprises aesthetically impairing vestibular lesions that can be camouflaged by resin infiltration.

The enhanced magnification and illumination provided by the dental operating microscope can be applied to almost all clinical situations. These include the diagnosis of caries, cracks and fractures, pit and fissure restorations, all stages of cavity, veneer and crown preparations and endodontic, periodontal and oral surgery procedures. In many dental specialties the microscope is already considered the standard of care, and its use in general practice is growing. By encouraging good posture the microscope benefits the health of the dentist and the chair side assistant. When combined with documentation facilities, the microscope is an excellent tool for patient education, record keeping and legal defence.

This course will emphasise your use of the microscope in every day clinical situations by means of �hands on� exercises on extracted teeth and tooth models. A team approach utilising a chair side assistant will be emphasised. Those who use loupes should bring them to the course. Loupes will also be available for trial. All reference material will be supplied. Your presenters are an endodontist and two general practitioners all with extensive microscope experience who look forward to sharing their knowledge with you.

Ultrasonics in Modern General Practice

Overview

The traditional role of ultrasonics in dental practice has been largely one of scaling teeth. However, in the last 15 years ultrasonics has expanded to other areas of clinical dentistry. In addition to periodontal procedures, ultrasonics is important in operative dentistry, from the placing of pit and fissure sealants to crown preparations. In endodontics, ultrasonics is used to clean debris from the pulp chamber and to find and locate canals. Ultrasonics assists in the cleaning, shaping and obturation of the root canal system and is essential for the removal of obstructions such as posts and separated instruments during re-treatment. It is also essential for periapical surgery.

The purpose of this practical �hands on� workshop is to introduce you to these ultrasonic techniques by carrying out various exercises on tooth models. The only requirement for the workshop is enthusiasm and a willingness to learn! All materials will be supplied. If you use magnifying loupes please bring them to the course (loupes will be available for trial as part of the course). Your instructors are a general practitioner, prosthodontist and endodontist, all with great experience in using ultrasonic treatment in everyday practice.

This 4 day hands on course is designed to offer the general dentist with a special interest in minor oral surgery an update on basic oral surgery theory and practice. The learning experience will be based on focused tutorials and the treatment of selected surgical cases under general and local anaesthesia. A course manual will be provided at least one month prior to the commencement date with a pre course assessment so that candidates will have familiarised themselves with core theoretical material and thus allow more time allocation for interactive focused discussion groups and practical application. It is anticipated that 16-24 hour of pre reading will be required to equip yourself for this 4-day course.

Operating sessions under general and local anaesthesia will be held daily and will be preceded by a series of mini lectures. Between cases short tutorials designed to complement surgical practice will be held. Participants will receive individual mentoring from a specialist oral surgeon and hospital specialists including sedation so that they can be guided step by step through each procedure.

Time will be allocated for debriefing and a system of critiquing will be applied to gauge performance of surgical cases.

This 2-day course aimed at general practitioners will feature morning lectures followed by hands-on sessions in the Faculty of Dentistry�s new- state-of-the-art simulation clinic. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and use 4 different rotary NiTi systems including: ProTaper, MTwo, Twisted File, and BioRACE. The clinical sessions will be preceded by practical seminars.

Participants will have the opportunity to use the lastest endodontic technology including: apex locators, C Pilot files, C+ files, 4 rotary NiTi file systems, and thermoplasticised root filling devices.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common disorder, affecting approximately 4% of men and 2% of women in the middle-aged workforce, as well as children and the elderly.

Overview

CPR & Managing Medical Emergencies will feature St John Ambulance staff providing hands-on training in a setting which mimics dental practice as closely as possible. St.John Ambulance have had some prior contact with the training of dentists including courses run at the United Dental Hospital.

The workshop will include practical CPR and participants are encouraged to attend dressed in comfortable clothing as there is heavy emphasis on practical aspects rather than pure theory. Other aspects include discussion of possible scenarios, and up-to-date information of the management of medically compromised patients with conditions which are not uncommonly encountered in dental practice. The importance of effective teamwork in an emergency will also be discussed and suggestions made as to how this might be achieved.
