The 2012 International Quintessence Symposium has been particularly designed to benefit general dental practitioners and will bring you the most up-to-date and clinically relevant evidence-based information through lectures and workshops devoted to topics of special importance to clinical practice. The program has broad appeal including oral cancer diagnostics, integrated treatment planning, imaging, ridge augmentation and site development for implants and CAD/CAM superstructures.
7.30am | Registration & Exhibition Open |
8.00am | Welcome - Scientific ChairmanProfessor Iven Klineberg AM, RFD, BSc, MDS, PhD, FRACDS, FICD On behalf of Henry Schein Halas and Quintessence International, it is a privilege for me to welcome you to the latest International Quintessence Symposium. As with previous Symposia, this program has been designed to benefit general dental practitioners in particular, and will bring you the most up-to-date and clinically relevant evidence-based information through lectures and workshops devoted to topics of special importance clinical practice. The program has broad appeal including oral cancer diagnostics, integrated treatment planning, imaging, ridge augmentation and site development for implants and CAD/CAM superstructures. I warmly welcome you to this state-of-the art program |
8.30am | Treatment Planning for the Lower Edentulous Ridge - The Removable ApproachDr Gary Smith BDSc, MDSc, FADI, FICD The treatment options to be presented include:
|
9.30am | Maxillary Sinus Elevation: 32 years of EvolutionAssociate Professor Stephen Wallace DDS This presentation will discuss changing thoughts about graft materials, surgical techniques and timing of implant placement and time to loading. Maxillary sinus elevation is evolving as we learn more about what is important and what is not. We have also learned how far to "push the envelope" in timing to implant placement and loading. This presentation will include:

10.30am | Morning Tea |
11.00am | All Ceramic Restorations - Clinical Performance Over 20 YearsProfessor Herbert Dumfahrt MD, DDS, PhD Over the last 20 years, all ceramic restorations have become a standard procedure in fixed prosthodontics, especially for anterior teeth where adhesively retained porcelain restorations provide an aesthetic result similar to nature. But in the premolar and molar area the use of all ceramic inlays and crowns enables the dentist to also create the illusion of untouched natural teeth. Yet the experiences of the last two decades have shown that the long term success of this kind of restoration may be influenced not only by fracture of the ceramic but also by micro leakage, staining of the margins and chipping of the ceramic. Participants will learn the clinical performance and the long-term outcomes up to 20 years of use of all ceramic inlay, overlay, crown and veneer restorations made out of ceramic without framework. |
12.00pm | Novel Implant Designs and Bone Grafing to Cope with Inadequate Bone Volume or Bone MorhologyProfessor Hugo De Bruyn MDSc, PhD Today implant placement is more prosthetically oriented as patients become more critical regarding both functionality as aesthetics. The availability of bone is often a prerequisite to achieve a predictable outcome. Additionally, patients require faster implant procedures and early provisionalisation. The limitations whenever implants are placed simultaneous to extraction or when there is a discrepancy between implant direction and prosthetic insertion can be overcome by additional surgeries such as bone regenerative procedures, but lengthens the treatment time, requires more difficult prosthetics and increases morbidity and complication risks. For the clinician taking into cosideration patient –related factor such as functional and esthetical demand, need and aesthetic the dilemma often arises from the cost-benefit aspect. Today bone grafting is often suggested in order to cope with the existing bone volume or bone morphology. In this lecture recently performed clinical trials on the outcome and success of wide body and angulated implant designs to overcome these problems will be summarized. The use of a wide body implant reduces treatment time significantly and may even be considered as an alternative for sinuslift and/or grafting. The angulated implant is indicated whenever bone angulation is present without compromising the treatment protocol whenever screw-retained solutions are preferred. On the other hand additional bone grafting procedure may still be indicated for aesthetic purposes. This lecture will deal with the use of novel implant designs, the effect of immediate placement and/or immediate loading, the necessity for provisionalisation, the prosthetic procedure, the peri-implant parameters and the patient’s opinion regarding the performed treatment. |
1.00pm | Panel - Question & Answers with the Morning Presenters |
1.30pm | Lunch |
2.30pm | Is The Mandibular Block Passe?Dr Stanley F Malamed DDS Providing consistently profound pulpal anesthesia in the mandible is, on more than rare occasions, quite vexing for even the most experienced dentist. Add to this a pulpally involved molar and the dentist and patient are frequently faced with a dilemma. How to extirpate the pulp of the infected mandibular molar? Professor Malamed will discuss the problem and offer some solutions, including the Gow-Gates mandibular nerve block, Vazirani-Akinosi (closed mouth) mandibular nerve block; Periodontal ligament injection (PDL, ILA), Intraosseous (IO), and buffered local anesthetics. The availability of alternative techniques will greatly assist the dentist in providing successful pain control in virtually all clinical situations. Is the mandibular block passé? Come see for yourself. |
3.30pm | Implant Supported Full Arch Zirconia-Based Fixed Prostheses: Considerations on Material, Procedures and Prosthesis DesignAssociate Professor Max Guazzato PhD, DDS, DClinDent (Pros), FRACDS, MRACDS (Pros), DT This lecture is an evidence-based talk on the most challenging clinical application of one of the most interesting materials ever used in dentistry: zirconia. In some way this is a personal journey where my expertise and research on rehabilitation of edentulous patients and where the development and application of dental ceramics came together to provide the edentulous patient with what I believe is a natural and comfortable prosthetic solution. The first part of the presentation will explain why alternative treatment options are no longer appealing. Then I will try to summarise 10 years of research on zirconia and explain how this material should be handled and designed to ensure a reliable clinical outcome. Surgical and prosthetic procedures will be rationalised with the support of current literature. In the second part of the lecture I will show clinical cases from a chronological order. This will illustrate how the design of the prosthesis has changed as more knowledge was achieved through research and clinical experience. Some cases have been selected to show how the design can be customised to the patient’s clinical situation and expectations. A brief summary of the future challenges and developments will conclude the talk. I hope you will have fun as I lead you through this journey! |
4.30pm | Afternoon Tea |
5.00pm | An Integrated Approach to Treatment Planning - The Ortho - Perio - Restorative ConnectionDr Ricardo Mitrani DDS, MSc One of the biggest challenges in contemporary dentistry is closing the gap between the different dental specialties. This challenge is magnified by dental patient desires for aesthetically driven treatment options. It could be said that a significant fraction of what contemporary interdisciplinary dynamics deals with, are those cases where treatment involves either adding lost tissue (hard and/or soft) or removing redundant tissue for a dentogingival correction. In order to obtain consistent and predictable results, surgeons, restoring dentists, orthodontists and dental technicians should work as a team. This presentation will take a close look at communication tools between specialists when considering conventional restorative dentistry and implant supported restorations, and it will also describe diverse clinical criteria involving treatment planning patients with different needs, starting with systematic data collection and directing therapy to ensure periodontal health, biomechanic and functional harmony in an aesthetic outcome. |
