The gold standard treatment of soft tissue volume deficiencies involves the harvesting of autologous connective tissue, usually from the palate. Harvesting of connective tissue can be somewhat technically challenging and is associated with donor site morbidity (i.e., pain, bleeding, and risk of infection). Geistlich Fibro-Gide is a novel xenogeneic biomaterial designed specifically for soft tissue regeneration. It is a procine-derived, porous, resorbable, and volume-stable collagen matrix which encourages angiogenesis and supports the ingrowth and formation of new connective tissue. This can now be achieved without the need of tissue harvesting; offering an exciting new alternative for connective tissue grafts. Collagen matrices can also be useful in the management of certain types of gingival recession defects.
