This course is a Dental Board of Australia approved add-on program.

The objectives of the course are to provide a theoretical foundation for preventing and managing early childhood caries and dental trauma in 0-4 year-olds, and to present an update on the techniques available for health promotion for young children.

The course will be delivered in the form of a workshop based on a mix of structured lecture content and case-studies. Topics covered in the course are conditions and techniques that are specific to this age group of children including:

  • Behaviour management of 0-4 year-olds
  • Examination and oral hygiene techniques for babies and toddlers
  • Common developmental and acquired oral conditions in toddlers
  • Anticipatory guidance and dental health promotion for young children
  • Early childhood caries - risk assessment and prevention
  • General principles of restorative dentistry and pulp management of young primary teeth which are affected by early childhood caries and trauma
  • Emergency management of dental trauma and acute conditions

At the end of the course, participants will undertake an assessment task based on multiple choice questions. On completion of this course, a participant should have the current concepts and basic theory for oral examinations, preventive and simple restorative techniques for 0-4 year-olds.
