The 2018 CERA & ADA NSW Conference on the Oral Health of Older Australians

The proportion of the population aged 65 years and over is growing and will be an increasingly large part of dental practice in the coming years. Maintaining oral health is definitely different in old age and may present challenges. Dental practitioners need to develop treatment-planning strategies specific to older patients and should also be proactive in the oral healthcare of those who become residents of long-term care facilities.

This 2-day program focuses on two themes:
Treatment planning for oral health in an ageing Australian population; and
Continuity of care – from independence to dependence.

The first day of the Conference will provide an overview of the changing roles dental practitioners need to develop in order to manage the varying demands of their older patients.  This will provide take-home clinical techniques and strategies which can be delivered in a variety of clinical settings using modern and creative materials and technologies. The second day will focus more on dealing with patients developing medical and cognitive disorders impacting on their oral health and ways in which dental providers can assist in the continued maintenance of their patient’s oral health in a more integrated health-based approach.

Topics include

  • The changing roles of dental practitioners as the world population ages
  • Oral care for the baby boomers: 90 the new 70.
  • Risk assessment and treatment planning
  • Consequences of dental implants in aged care
  • Supporting private dental providers to deliver dental care in domiciliary and residential settings with the safe use of portable dental equipment and modern technology
  • Sustaining oral and systemic health in Australian Residential Aged care Facilities
  • The role of dental hygienists and oral health therapists in prevention and oral health maintenance for older patients
  • Multi-disciplinary management and specialist geriatric dental care
  • Medical and cognitive conditions impacting on older patients oral health care
  • Basic management skill for assisting people with cognitive disabilities
  • The expanded geriatric team: working together to improve the health of our older patients

Learning Objectives

To provide dental practitioners with practical solutions to managing older patients as they transition from full independence and good health, through the ageing process to frailty and dependence on others to assist in maintaining their oral health.

Other Information

This conference also provides an opportunity for undergraduate students and graduate dental practitioners to present Posters on their Clinical and Research activities for participants to see and hear emerging oral health techniques and strategies to assist older people.
