Current concepts for augmenting peri-implant soft tissues are based on the use of autologous tissue, most often harvested from the palatal area. These transplants have a long history with many publications documenting their effectiveness, safety, and long-term stability.

However, autologous tissue grafts do have several disadvantages and limitations, including:
• Finite availability and variable thickness of the donor tissue according to the anatomic dimensions of the palatal vault
• Limited graft length and thickness due to anatomy (i.e., a thick alveolar process, exostoses, and the palatine nerves and blood vessels)
• Donor site morbidity (pain and numbness at the donor site)
• Aesthetic compromises

To overcome these issues, research has focused on the development of suitable soft tissue graft substitutes. Such biomaterials must demonstrate favourable biological behaviour, allowing for normal modelling and remodelling processes to occur. For soft tissue volume augmentation, a
volume stable collagen matrix is required. The use of collagen matrices for gaining width of keratinised tissues and for increasing soft tissue volume will be presented.

This workshop will provide: an analysis of the available research data, discuss clinical indications, and present surgical protocols in peri-implant soft tissue management and periodontal plastic surgery.

Participants will familiarise themselves with the properties, handling, and placing of collagen matrices on pig jaws. Correct flap designs, soft tissue handling, and suturing techniques will also be a focus of these exercises.

Please feel free to bring your loupes.
