The number of dental patients with chronic systemic diseases continues to increase. It is important for oral health care providers to understand the pathophysiology of common medical conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hepatic and renal diseases, neurologic and psychiatric disorders and to recognise typical presenting signs & symptoms of these conditions.

It is critical for oral health care providers to understand how chronic medical conditions may impact oral health status and why provision of oral health care often requires alteration for medically complex patients.

This course will review pathophysiology of common medical disorders, provide updates on recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances relevant to specific medical conditions, highlight the impact of these disorders on oral health, and review protocols for evaluation and management of medically complex patients in the dental office, with emphasis on clinical case presentations. This course is geared towards general dentists, dental specialists and dental hygienists.

Course Objectives:

  1. To review pathophysiology of common medical disorders, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hepatic and renal diseases, neurologic and psychiatric conditions.
  2. To provide updates on recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances for these common medical disorders.
  3. To highlight the impact of these common medical disorders on overall oral health.
  4. To review protocols for evaluation and management of medically complex patients in the dental office with emphasis on clinical case presentations.
