Dental sleep medicine is an expanding area of everyday dental practice and practitioners need to develop their skills and knowledge of this complex issue. This update programme will provide information on incorporating Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) into dental practice. It will look at the range of appliances available and review recent developments in oral appliance therapy, including criteria for selection of appliance, techniques for improving success rates as well as strategies for dealing with side effects. There will also be a review of the normal physiology of sleep and respiration, and the pathologic consequences when problems arise. In addition the role of an ENT specialist in sleep disordered breathing will be discussed in the context of how the dental team can get the best value out of their preferred ENT specialist.
