This course is directed to the entire dental team and focuses specifically on visible soft tissue abnormalities including tissue deficiencies. These are easily overlooked and can lead to situations that are difficult to retrieve. It aims to enhance clinical skills in recognising and assessing soft tissues from the lips through to the periodontium and oral and oropharyngeal areas.
The dental professional is in an ideal situation with a regularly reviewed cohort of patients to examine patients comprehensively from facial skin and lips to the more familiar areas of the periodontium and oral soft tissues. It will also extend to the oropharynx and demonstrate indirect laryngoscopy and clinical assessment of the neck.
Commonly seen pathology, tissue deficiencies and age changes of these sites and tissues will be used to demonstrate presentation and assessment and discuss management plans. Many conditions are chronic and they will demonstrate both immediate treatment as well as the longer term management. The discussion will also focus on the various roles of members of the dental team and how this cooperative approach can enhance treatment outcomes and successful long-term maintenance.
