Durable restorative treatment is required when young children present with compromised primary molars. Stainless steel crowns and vital pulp therapy techniques have a high success rate when done well. However, careful diagnosis and case selection is critical to achieve good outcomes.

This workshop is supported by pre-reading, private study and assessment. It will explore pulpal diagnosis in the primary dentition and clarify the treatment planning process for pulpally-involved primary molars. The evidence behind different treatment approaches, medicaments and materials will also be explored. Hands-on simulation exercises in pulpotomy techniques and the placement of stainless steel crowns will follow the theoretical session. Participants will have the opportunity to complete pulpotomy procedures and stainless steel crown preparations on both natural and synthetic first and second primary molars, All participants work with MTA in addition to the more traditional pulpotomy materials.

Workshop participants will:

  • appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of SSCs over other restorative materials for deciduous molars
