The intended audience for this event includes:

This course will look at the huge number of causes of orofacial pain. This includes dento-alveolar, mucosal, musculoligamentous and neurovascular origins.

Specific areas to be addressed will be Trigeminal Neuralgia, Burning mouth, TMD, Chronic (persistent) idiopathic facial pain, Psychosocial aspects of pain, Impact of pain, psychological and general pain. Communication with patients and Evidence based approach to patient care will be presented.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Aim: Improve skills in managing non dental facial pain. By the end of this course participants should be able to:

  1. Appreciate the need for a comprehensive pain history.
  2. Provide an evidence based approach to management of non dental orofacial pain through the use of case studies especially TMD, burning mouth syndrome, persistent idiopathic facial pain, atypical odontalgia/trigeminal neuropathic pain and trigeminal neuralgia.
  3. Understand the need for a biopsychosocial approach which uses cognitive behaviour therapy.
  4. Understand the principles of cognitive behaviour therapy.
  5. Appreciate the value of providing patients with improved information on diagnosis and management of chronic pain including decision making tools.
