The title of this presentation may seem like a contradiction of terms. There are many edgewise appliances used in orthodontics, but they are never intermaxillary. There are also many intermaxillary machines that are used routinely by all of us, but they are never edgewise. Dr Jasper will explore this disconnect and look at all of our overjet appliances through the eyes of physics - the ultimate in evidence.
Dr Jasper was the first to develop a comfortable, gentle fixed force system in 1987. This breakthrough appliance used the facial muscles to produce force vectors, instead of counting on the patient to do the work. However, these vectors were linear in character and produced tipping of the maxilla, a very negative side effect. All current class II appliances share this tipping problem in common. In 2010, he made a conceptual leap to bring the concept of edgewise to the intermaxillary level. We control the tipping of the teeth by using curved vectors. Why not use them for producing jaw relationship changes? His new patented appliances produce only 3.5 ounces of force and can correct the largest overjet in 6 months or less without any tipping of the maxilla.
Participants should be able to:
- Realize they are using uncontrolled tipping forces with their current attempts to eliminate overjet.
- Understand that there are only four categories of appliances possible.
- Choose the category that fits their treatment goals and treatment plans the best.
- Understand that 70% of our Class II patients need mandibular advancement instead of maxillary restraint.
- Understand that non-compliant adolescents can run their treatment plans and negatively affect their income potential.
