The root canal system is highly complex, making adequate cleaning during root canal treatment challenging. Most files create round preparations, limiting their potential to scrape the walls of oval shaped canals, fins, communications and isthmuses. Several studies using micro CT technologies demonstrated that round files touch only a small portion of the canal walls. Because of these limitations, many adjunctive techniques have been used to compensate for these shortcomings, including; higher concentrations of NaOCl and EDTA, sonic or ultrasonic activation of the irrigants, or using laser technology.

Recent developments in file design utilising the NiTi alloy characteristics has allowed us to produce cleaner canals and preserve the tooth structure. The new micro computed tomographic studies have shown significant effectiveness with the newer file designs.
