Course Description Local anaesthesia forms the backbone of pain control techniques in dentistry. The past decade has seen the development of new drugs and techniques which have made the delivery of painless dental treatment almost a reality. In this programme, Professor Malamed will discuss the armamentarium of drugs currently available to dental professionals in New Zealand, as well as soon-to-come developments (e.g. buffered local anaesthetics, local anaesthesia reversal, intranasal local anaesthetic mist for maxillary non-molar teeth) that will further enhance dentistry’s ability to personalise the pain control experience for our patients. The second portion of the programme will address the ‘problem’ of the ‘mandibular block,’ a technique causing angst to all dentists at some time in their career. Do you still need to administer this injection when treating mandibular teeth? Professor Malamed will discuss the many other techniques available to achieve mandibular pain control, including the Gow-Gates Mandibular Nerve Block, Periodontal Ligament (PDL) Injection, Intraosseous (IO); Intracrestal; and the administration of Articaine by mandibular infiltration in adult patients.
