Working between the Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie surgeries, I am the principal clinician at Davis Dental.
I started my dental career in Sydney, completing a bachelor of dental surgery in 1984. There were more dental graduates than jobs in Sydney at that stage so I went to Port Hedland for the experience and to see Australia. As you may know it is one of the most isolated, hot towns in Australia. I enjoyed the challenge of remote dental practice and the gained a wide experience due to the lack of specialist dental providers up there.
I moved to Perth in late 1986 and established my own general dental practices in 1988, one in East Victoria Park and one in Wembley. I was accepted into a master’s degree program in restorative dentistry at UWA and started the degree in 1990. This involved three years of full time study, clinical training and a research thesis on high strength dental ceramics.
Upon finishing my master’s degree I accepted a position working on Faculty at the dental school at UWA as a senior lecturer. This was a busy time and I progressed to be the senior restorative staff member at UWA and was involved in rewriting the entire curriculum for the BDSc program. I also worked in part time private practice in West Perth at the Branemark centre with Dr Patrick Henry.
In 1997 I moved to the north coast of NSW to see more of this beautiful country we live in and enjoy the lifestyle of the best part of Australia. Since being here I have worked as a consultant prosthodontist in Forster, Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Woolgoolga. Over the years the travel between practices became a bit much and I only work from Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour now.
I have always been involved with the Australian Dental Association since becoming a dentist. In 2014 I was elected to the executive committee of the NSW branch of the ADA. I was chairman of my local division for thirteen years and stood down to be deputy chairman last year. I am chairman of the Dental Practice committee of the NSW ADA as well as a member of the infection control, professional indemnity and audit committees. I am also the chairman of the local organising committee for the 2014 ADA NSW convention which will be held in Port Macquarie. That is why it may be had to get an appointment on a Friday, I have 26 trips to sydney booked in 2014. I believe in giving my time and experience to a profession I love and attempting to develop policies that supports equitable and ethical dentistry.
I have had experience with a wide range of procedures in prosthodontics. This includes complex paediatric cases at Princess Margaret hospital in Perth, maxillofacial prosthetics, medically compromised people at UWA and complex prosthetic cases.
My current primary interest is implant rehabilitation and full mouth reconstruction however regional practice means that I am involved with a wide range of prosthodontic procedures. I have lectured on Prosthodontics in all states of Australia (except Tasmania) and in numerous countries around the world. In 2014 I will be presenting to groups of dentists on over 20 occasions.
