Troy graduated with a Bachelor of Science majoring in immunology from the Australian National University in 2004. He then completed his dental degree at Griffith University through the Royal Australian Air Force undergraduate scheme. Since graduation, he has been posted to Air Force bases in Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory, and was part of a multi-national humanitarian aid mission to Tonga in 2013. In 2014, he commenced his periodontal postgraduate training at Griffith University, and graduated in 2017. He was awarded the ASPQ Professor GJ Seymour & Professor MP Cullinan Research Medallion for his research on zirconia implants, and has published papers on periodontal prognosis, adjunctive use of systemic antibiotics in the non-surgical treatment of periodontitis, and the biomaterial properties of implants.
