Professor Mark Bartold received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Adelaide in 1979. In 1980 he received his Bachelor of Science in Dentistry with First Class Honours and in 1983 graduated Doctor of Philosophy. He qualified for Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the Special Stream of Periodontics in 1991. In 1996 Professor Bartold qualified for the degree of Doctor of Dental Science on this basis of a collection of his published research papers. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In 2004 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to periodontal research and teaching.
Professor Bartold is currently Professor of Periodontics and Director of the Colgate Australian Clinical Dental Research Centre at the University of Adelaide. From 1992 – 2002 he was Professor of Periodontics at the University of Queensland. Professor Bartold is a past president of many professional organizations including the ANZ Division of the IADR, the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology, the IADR Periodontal Research Group and the Division of Periodontics of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He is currently Chairman of the Board of the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation, a Board member of the International Academy of Periodontology, Honorary Editor and Board Member of the Asian Pacific Society of Periodontology and a member of the Executive Committee of the IADR Periodontal Research Group.
He is a member of the editorial board of 8 international dental journals and is the current Editor of the Australian Dental Journal. Professor Bartold has authored over 230 scientific articles and co-edited 6 books as well as holds two patents arising from his research work. He has received a number of awards for his research. Professor Bartold has lectured in the U.S.A., Japan, Europe, Scandinavia, South East Asia, UK and Australia. In addition to these research and teaching commitments he also maintains a part-time private specialist periodontics practice in Adelaide.
